Mary of Iona Memorial Dedication 18th September

romhc Wednesday, 4 September 2024

A memorial to the victims of the Mary of Iona tragedy is being dedicated at 11am in the Chapel St Graveyard in Gourock on Wednesday 18th September, weather permitting of course but, if inclement, will take place in the Old Gourock and Ashton Church Hall in Royal St, Gourock. This is thanks to a local retired journalist (David Carnduff) and a church (Rev David Burt) whose old graveyard is where the victims of the Mary Tragedy were buried in mass graves.

We hope to have a piper, songs from the local primary school as well as the Greenock Gaelic School and input from local Gaelic speakers as well as a brief history of the event from Tom Aitchison. There will be tea and cake afterwards in the church hall. All welcome to attend!

The full story of the tradgedy can be read here - The Drowning of the Harvesters.

The Ross of Mull is an extraordinary microcosm of all that draws visitors to the Hebridean Islands. The scenery, as you travel along the single-track road from the ferry at Craignure is breath-taking. You experience in the many walks in the area a true sense of wilderness; the secret bays with their beaches of silvery sand, the abundance of wildlife and the innumerable marks on the landscape of the lives of past generations and communities long gone. The Ross of Mull is a compelling place for anyone fascinated by history and the ancient way of life of the Gaelic people.
